Substitutions are all over the place

When some sort of food item is in short supply or not available at all, all of us turn to replacements.

Margarine for butter is a well-known replacement in baking. Artificial sweeteners are used when people must cut down on sugar content. Tim Hortons Coffee and Tim Hortons Latte can replace certain items depending on the drinker’s preference! Cost is another factor that drives people to numerous alternatives. If beef is too costly then I commonly opt for pork or chicken or whatever happens to be on sale. Some people even resort to becoming vegans. In sports, some athletes have found fame and fortune being labeled as a replacement! John Havlicek (1940-2019) is in the NBA Hall of Fame having played the role of 6th man for the Boston Celtics in the 1960s and 1970s. In our households, if the electricity goes out, then I can replace a gas-powered generator for a while to keep our refrigerator and freezer going. A sudden loss of electricity also means a loss of internet signal so we basically use the computer DVD player to replace YouTube if the PC’s battery is charged. There are other things in our households such as antiques and heirlooms that have no replacements whatsoever. Another thing with no replacement is the cool and refreshing air that our central Heating and Air Conditioning devices supply. There are alternate ways of cooling and heating small spaces such as a window A/C devices to replace a central A/C system. There are also portable A/C devices that are expensive and eat up a great deal of energy. An old-fashioned fan will also supply a bit of relief from the heat, however it is not able to compete with the Heating and Air Conditioning device that keeps the entire household cool. On a higher level of thought, there is no replacement for love, however that will be sorely tested during any lengthy Heating and Air Conditioning outage.
