I Got My Kids Involved With Saving On Our Utility Costs

I’ve been trying to cut back on my utility bill that I receive each month. I started by making little changes in my daily routine like turning the water off when I’m brushing my teeth, unplugging my phone from the outlet when it’s already charged, and lowering the thermostat settings before I leave the house. The first month I did this, I noticed a slight drop in the utility bill, but it wasn’t much. I wasn’t the best at remembering these changes, so I decided to get my kids on board. I sat them all down and asked them to make the same changes with the water, electric, and thermostat. I didn’t think my plan through because my kids quickly got into the habit of lowering the thermostat before they left the house. I would lower the temperature a few degrees before I left for work, then my son would lower it before he left for practice, and then my daughter would lower it again before she left for school. By the time I made it home, I was stepping into an icebox! Our furnace wasn’t running all day anymore, because the thermostat settings were so low. Instead of spiking the temperature up right away, I’d adjust the thermostat a few degrees at a time. I feared that if I made a drastic change, the furnace would work extra hard to heat our home, causing our utility bill to rise. After this happened a few times, I asked my kids to only worry about the water and electricity. I could handle the thermostat settings by myself.
