Cold kitchen and a hot basement; The saga of a chaotic electric heater

I had so many horrors as well as funny stories about HVAC systems.

  • I did not know that after this week, I would have my own story to tell about my heating and cooling unit.

I knew a few things about these systems as I had interned at some local HVAC companies throughout my college years. I slightly understood the workings of a unit and knew that it was important to perform periodic tune-ups. I ensured that quality AC service was done on my unit during every fall season. I was working from home a lot more and so I needed a functional system. The indoor air cleaning system especially needed to be in top-notch conditioning because I have asthma. I made a point of cleaning out the air conditioning filter every 3 months. One morning I woke up to a very cold kitchen when I tried adjusting the temperature using the climate control tool, but it was in vain. The rest of the house seemed warm enough, so I turned on the radiant heater and placed it in the kitchen. I thought the cooling install had been poorly done, so I contacted the heating business for assistance. The heating device had clearly malfunctioned since the temperature in the basement was unusually high. The a/c rep discovered that the electric heater had short-circuited and there was also a leak on the oil heater thus the cold and hot spots. She did the boiler repair on the gas furnace and within a few hours, everything was back to normal. Even with my assumption of knowing more about HVAC, I failed to diagnose my chaotic system. It was a good thing my story was not as horrific as some I had heard, but it showed my cluelessness.
