When my son decided he did not have any desire to go to a college or university after high school, we began exploring other options. Obviously, he couldn’t just go out and get a job that would be considered a career move. Working at a fast food restaurant just isn’t good enough, and high school doesn’t prepare kids for anything else. That is when we started looking into the HVAC program at the local vocational school. We began making a checklist of what he was looking for in life, and then we started looking at how he could attain those goals. He wanted to do something with his hands. That meant a trade like being a mechanic or a/c repair technician. He wanted something that he could learn in a year or two at the most. Again, the HVAC program fit the bill, as did some other options such as barbering and plumbing. He wanted to help people and have them be excited to see him pull up. Granted plumbers are needed and people usually like them because they solve problems, but heating and cooling professionals don’t get quite as dirty. He wanted to learn something where he could start his own business, and he looked into what it takes to start various businesses, including heating and cooling companies as well as others. Well, I guess you can determine that he went to school and studied the HVAC technology program. He now owns his own HVAC company, and I never have to pay for an air conditioner repair ever again! His company brings people relief!
